MILTON-FREEWATER — The McLoughlin High School baseball team overcame a 3-1 deficit to beat Waitsburg-Prescott, 13-3, on Tuesday.
W-P opened a two-run lead in the fourth, but Mac-Hi responded by tying the game in their half of the fourth before adding 10 runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to clinch the win.
“I was very pleased with our ability to stay focused on our pregame goals, which was to not let negative situations determine the outcome,” Mac-Hi coach Michael Garcia said. “I liked the way they were able to battle back.”
The Pioneers’ top of the order did most of the damage, as Mac-Hi’s No. 1 through 6 hitters accounted for nine of the runs. Vince Roff, in the No. 2 spot, drew five walks and scored four runs.
Mac-Hi’s Chase Copenhaver came up with a double and a triple en route to two RBIs and Blake Yensen added two singles to drive in runs.
“I was very pleased with our plate approach today,” Garcia said. “Our young men made sure that they were patient enough to swing at pitches that they could drive or at least put in play. We were able to force the W-P pitchers to work deep into the count and it worked in our favor.”
Hunter Yensen got the start for the Pioneers and went four innings, striking out four. Copenhaver relieved Yensen in the fifth and went the final two innings, allowing no runs and racking up four strikeouts as well.
“In order to have the success that we want — that is what we need to be able to accomplish each time we take the field,” Garcia said.
Mac-Hi faces DeSales on Tuesday. Waitsburg-Prescott faces Burbank on Tuesday as well.
