YAKIMA — Yakima Valley handed the Warriors their first NWAACC East Region baseball loss and only their second overall loss of the year Saturday. The Warriors won the first game, 7-2, but suffered an 8-6 setback in the nightcap.
“Yakima is always a tough place to play,” WWCC coach Dave Meliah said, “so it’s nice to get out of there with a win.”
The Warriors got a sterling start from AJ Carkner in game one, building a 4-0 lead as Carkner threw six scoreless innings before giving up a run in the sixth.
Carkner struck out four and walked one in his outing.
“AJ (Carkner) had a solid outing in game one,” Meliah said. “He was very efficient and really maximized his pitch count.”
Leading 4-1 entering the final frame, WWCC all but guaranteed the win with three more runs in the top of the ninth.
The Warriors held a 5-3 lead after four innings in the second game, but starting pitcher Kalani Omoto ran into trouble to start the home fifth. Omoto gave up a leadoff double and four consecutive singles for three runs before being pulled in favor of Johnny McNerney.
The Warriors recovered to tie the game at six in the sixth inning with an RBI double from Jarod Gonzales, but YVCC scored the winning runs on an error in the seventh inning.
The Warriors (3-1 East Region, 12-2 overall) are still tied for second place in the East with Columbia Basin.
They next take the field Wednesday for a home doubleheader with Big Bend at 1 p.m.
