Dayton softball team drops two to Asotin

ASOTIN — Dayton lost a pair of Southeast 2B softball games to Asotin Saturday, 9-1 and 6-4.

Dayton struck first in game one, scoring its only run of the game in the first inning, but Asotin rallied to score seven runs in the second inning, thanks in part to Dayton errors, and cruised to the win from there.

Dayton held its first lead of the day, 3-2, after scoring single runs in each of the first three innings of the nightcap, but Asotin responded with two runs in the bottom of the third and another two-spot in the bottom of the fifth to take the win.

“The girls came back and played a competitive second game,” Dayton coach Desirae Jones said. “We just need our bats to come alive and improve on our defense now.”

Dayton (0-2 SE2B, 1-4 overall) gave up nine errors combined in the doubleheader.

“We’ve been pretty solid on defense so far,” Jones said. “We bobbled some balls today, but we came up against a team that hit the ball pretty well.”

Phillips, a junior second baseman, finished with four hits on the day, including a double and a home run. Freshman outfielder Torry Johnson went 3-for-3 in game two with a double.

Jones said the Bulldogs could possibly make up a rained out game against McLoughlin High School in Milton-Freewater on Thursday, but that the details had not been worked out yet.
