H. Bernice Mohr

College Place resident H. Bernice Mohr, 89, passed away March 26, 2014, at Providence St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla.
One of seven children, Bernice was born May 22, 1924, to Bert and Hilda Morkrid Axness. They died in a tragic accident in September 1925, and the children were adopted by several families. Bernice and Helen were adopted by Henry and Marie Fuerstnow of Peerless, Mont. They were wonderful parents. Bernice attended elementary school in Peerless and graduated from high school in Corvallis, Ore. The family moved to Walla Walla in 1941.
In 1943, she and Francis Dewey Walker married. They were married for 30 years and had five children, including twins. They later divorced.
On Sept. 9, 1974, she and Alvin T. Mohr married in Reno. They were married for 38 years. She worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for two years and was a per diem clerk for Bonneville Power Administration for 25 years, retiring in November 1984. Following retirement, they made their permanent home in the Blue Mountains on Lewis Peak Road, moving to College Place in 1995. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved doing jigsaw puzzles and word search. She loved animals and was always finding the owners or homes for stray dogs and cats. Most of their own pets were stray animals. She was a member of B.P.O.E. Lodge #287 in Walla Walla.
She is survived by four daughters, Janet Knapp of Pullman, Helen Hayworth of Milton-Freewater, Debbie Walker and Darlene Johnson both of Walla Walla; her step-daughter, Sharon Cohu of Sunnyside, Wash.; her son, Robert Walker of College Place; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alvin Mohr in 2012; two brothers, four sisters and one grandson.

There will be a private family committal service at Mountain View Cemetery.
