Pioneers smack Goldendale

GOLDENDALE — The McLoughlin High School baseball team clubbed 25 hits combined in a sweep of Goldendale on Tuesday.

The Pioneers opened with an 8-5 win in game one, before taking the night cap, 5-2. Hunter Yensen led the offensive surge, as he finished with five hits in the two games.

“We talked a little bit about not sending too many fly balls out because those are easy outs,” Mac-Hi coach Mike Garcia said. “I thought they did a good job of having a better approach at the plate and swinging a little more level.”

The Pioneer pitching staff also played a big role in the sweep, as Chase Copenhaver restricted the Timberwolves to just five hits in game one. Copenhaver, who hadn’t pitched in a few weeks, threw just 22 pitches over the final three innings.

“He’s throwing a lot of strikes,” Garcia said. “That’s what we wanted him to do going into this weekend — have his control and have that confidence as well.”

Mac-Hi (8-7 overall, 1-5 in Greater Oregon League) faces La Grande on Saturday.
