Indians make quick work of Tigercats

TOUCHET — To say that Touchet made short work of Lacrosse-Washtucna here Monday afternoon in a Southeast 1B District softball doubleheader is an understatement.

By mutual agreement between the schools’ athletic directors, a 15-run mercy rule was to be enforced after three innings of play in each game. And the Indians accommodated the visiting Tigercats, winning the three-inning opener 16-0 and posting a similar 16-1 victory in the three-inning nightcap.

The Indians scored nine run in the first inning and seven in the second in the first game and didn’t bat in their half of the the third. Touchet followed up with an 11-run first inning in the second game, scored once in the second and four times in the bottom of the third, with the decisive 16th run scoring on a game-ending wild pitch.

Harlie Schaeffer and Jennifer Aceves had two hits each for the Indians in the opener. Schaeffer drove home two runs with a double in the first inning and added an RBI single in the second while Aceves stroked RBI singles in each of the first two frames.

Shelby Gould added a two-run double in the first inning for Touchet and Maddie Fenton connected for a two-run single in the second.

Katie Whinery had L-W’s lone hit of the day, a clean single off of Makayla Bishop in the first inning of the first game.

Cierra Jo McKeown pitched a no-hitter in the second game, striking out 10 and walking three.

“We’re trying to stretch her out and get her some more innings,” Touchet coach Gary Dorman said of McKeown. “There were not many innings to get kids in today, but everybody did play and that is a good thing.”

McKeown also had a pair of hits in the second game, scored twice and knocked in one run. Melissa Creek belted a bases-loaded triple and an RBI single in the Indians’ 11-run first inning, Maddie Fenton doubled home two runs in the first inning and added an RBI single in the third, and Shantai Big Sorrel Horse chipped in with an RBI single in the third inning.

Touchet hiked its league record to 6-1 and is 9-6 overall. The Indians entertain Pomeroy here today in a 3 p.m. league doubleheader.
