WALLA WALLA — It was a fitting senior day for DeSales’ pitcher Ashlyn Lyons.
Lyons, one of three seniors on the Irish softball team, tossed a no-hitter against Waitsburg-Prescott as DeSales downed W-P, 10-0, in the first game of a doubleheader. The Irish then handed the ball to game two pitcher Kaylee Brown and watched as she restricted Waitsburg-Prescott to just one hit, as the Irish completed the sweep with a 14-0 win.
“She pitched real well,” DeSales coach Russell Vera said of Lyons. “She’s just been pitching well all season. It was good for them to go out there and get a ‘W’. The way Ashlynn pitched — it was a pretty darn good game.”
The Irish, who finished their league schedule a perfect 10-0 with the wins, posted six runs in the second inning of the opener. Teresa Acock led off with a double, senior Claire Conley followed with a single and the Irish took advantage of a couple W-P errors and a walk to start the scoring. Alyssa James’ double also added to the six-run outburst.
After game one went just five innings, the night cap proved to be more of the same, as the Irish jumped out to an 8-0 lead after the second inning.
The offense came from up and down the order, Vera said, as Acock, Maddy Thomas and Megan Hamada all finished with multiple hits.
“We haven’t been hitting this well in over two years,” Vera said. “It seems like we’ve got seven to nine girls that are contributing and hitting the ball when we really need them to hit.”
The 14 runs were more than enough for DeSales’ freshman hurler, Brown, who shut down the W-P offense with eight strikeouts. Vera said Brown’s changeup kept the Waitsburg-Prescott hitters off balance and helped the Irish end this one in just five innings.
DeSales (13-3 overall, 10-0 in league) plays four more non-conference games before the district tournament. The Irish travel to play a doubleheader with Colfax on Friday.
