MILTON-FREEWATER — The McLoughlin High School softball team had the bats working against Baker on Wednesday — lambasting their opponent by scores of 20-0 and 13-2, both in five innings.
The Pioneers spread 33 hits and drew nine walks in the two games.
Mac-Hi showed off its versatility at the plate, as Colette Robert hit a grand slam in game one, slapper Jenny Field racked up seven combined hits — including six bunt singles — and teammate Shannon Carter drew three free passes in the nightcap.
“Gosh, everybody hit today — our slappers got on (and) put the ball in play,” Mac-Hi coach Nicole Christian said. “Our power hitters came up and hit. Today we got our base runners into score and we’ve been working on that.
“It was a great team effort at the plate today, 33 hits is huge,” she added.
For as well as the offense played, the pitching was up to par in the opener. Robert threw a perfect game with seven strikeouts, no walks and no base runners allowed. Robert faced 15 Baker batters and retired them in order.
“Today was awesome,” Christian said. “That first game Colette threw a perfect game. We had the defense behind her when they did put it in play. So that is huge, that is another notch on her belt. It was nice to have the defense make the plays and she did a great job in the circle.”
Robert went back to the circle and pitched all five innings of game two. She allowed three hits, two runs early on and struck out seven with two hit batters.
Abi Biggs led the Pioneer offense, as she knocked in three RBIs with a double, single and walk.
Teammate Mallory Copeland and Sally Field both added multiple hits, as Copeland finished with three hits and an RBI and Field collected three bunt singles.
Stefanie Copeland also tallied a pair of RBIs, on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and RBI double.
In the opening game, Pioneers up and down the lineup were chipping in to the offense.
Leadoff hitter Brooke Kralman punched three singles and Carter laced two hits from the No. 2 spot in the order.
Robert, in the No. 3 spot, amassed four hits. She slugged 1.000 with two doubles, a home run, a triple and eight RBIs.
Stefanie Copeland had cleanup duties, and finished with two singles, a double and three RBIs.
Mallory Copeland and Makayla Kelly both chipped in a hit apiece and Brittney Erb followed with two RBIs on two hits.
The Pioneers (10-0 GOL, 16-3 overall) are ranked No. 4 overall in class 4A state of Oregon RPI rankings.
Mac-Hi travels to Ontario for a Greater Oregon League finale doubleheader on May 17.
