Washington state receives AmeriCorps grants

OLYMPIA (AP) — Washington state is receiving $15.5 million for AmeriCorps programs that will add more than 1,100 volunteers to the state.

Gov. Jay Inslee announced Thursday that the state received the funding from the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that includes AmeriCorps, a nationwide community service program.

Most of the money, $14.6 million, will go to the Washington Commission for National and Community Service, which will award grants to five nonprofit organizations and public agencies across the state that will pay for 1,099 AmeriCorps members in service. An additional $980,750 is being awarded to two multi-state programs headquartered in Washington, which will add up to 81 AmeriCorps positions.

AmeriCorps members are involved with programs in education, the environment, disaster response and recovery, and supporting veterans and military families.
