Jan. 14, 1953 — May 5, 2014
Jim Andrews (the founder of The Auto Man in Walla Walla) was born in La Grande on Jan. 14, 1953, to Malcolm C. and Phyllis Brown Andrews. He spent his first years around his dad’s print shop, and from an early age demonstrated unusual mechanical interests and talents. Often he could be found fixing his older sister’s bicycle or coaxing some discarded piece of equipment back into working condition.
After spending most of his youth in the Pacific Northwest and California, Jim moved to the Walla Walla area, where he met and married Valerie Ann Pike on Feb. 14, 1975. Jim and Val then relocated to Arizona, where their son, Nathan, was born in Flagstaff, Ariz. During his adult years, Jim worked in all facets of the automotive industry for a number of different dealerships, as well as starting his own repair shop, The Auto Man, in Phoenix.
In 2004, after moving back to the Pacific Northwest, Jim re-opened the Auto Man repair shop that is now on East Isaacs Avenue. Jim and his crew often went the extra mile for their clients, and the business soon gained the reputation of fast, friendly and professional service.
Late in 2010, Jim began the greatest struggle of his life when he found out he had multiple myeloma cancer. After a valiant fight, he went to sleep, May 5, 2014, in the company of his son Nathan and his life partner Jan Tegtmeier.
Jim always had a strong, positive faith in God and His providence.
