MILTON FREEWATER — The Milton-Freewater Rural Fire District is ready to fight fire with fire ... fighters.
As well as with good burgers.
The department has planned two fundraisers to bring in money to help support the YMCA’s summer activity programs for local children. The Y has collaborated with the Milton-Freewater Unified School District and Family Medical Center to offer two one-week sessions for kids 6-12.
Through observation on fire runs, his crew recognizes the need for kids to be in constructive settings, particularly in the summer, said Lt. Rob Snell with the fire district. A father to three children, Snell said he hopes to raise $5,000 for a first-year effort.
To start things off, the “All American Barbecue and Silent Auction” is planned for Saturday at Yantis Park at noon. Tickets are $6 per person, $20 for a family. Auction items include Mariners memorabilia, services and merchandise from local businesses.
On May 30, the firefighters will battle cops in “Guns and Hoses,” pitting the fire district against Milton-Freewater Police Department in a football game at Shockman Field.
Firefighters are going to be merciless, Snell said. “Oh, we’ll beat them, no problem.”
T-shirts will be available for sale at the game. Tickets are $10 each or $30 for five.
Tickets for both events can be found at the Milton-Freewater Rural Fire District station, 84629 Eastside Road, the Milton-Freewater Police Department at Milton-Freewater City Hall, 722 S. Main St., and at the gates.
