Athletes punch 2B state tickets

MOSCOW, Idaho — The Waitsburg-Prescott High School track team will send five athletes to state after day one of the 2B District 9 Championships at the University of Idaho on Thursday.

W-P’s Owen Lanning nabbed the district title in the 300-meter hurdles with a mark of 42.67 seconds. His teammate, Trenton Kitselman, finished fourth in 48.45 and the duo will move on to state. Kitselman replaces a Walla Walla Valley Academy hurdler who can’t compete in lane events next week.

DeSales’ hurdler Sergio Alexis Pena finished third in the 300 hurdles with a time of 46.17.

W-P throwers also punched their ticket to state, as Nate Bartlow and Zion Branson finished second and third, respectively, in the shot put. Bartlow, who threw 42-09.25, finished just behind Asotin’s Jacob Swearingen. Branson had stiffer competition, as his throw (38-05.25) beat the next two competitors by less than four inches.

“The third spot was really up in the air and we figured it was between three or four guys,” W-P coach Jeff Bartlow said. “Nate threw his best today and so it came down to three guys (two others from Asotin) and Zion went back and forth with two of them — inching them out, literally, for third. I was proud of Zion and as a sophomore, to sneak into state like that — it was a big deal.”

Emily Adams was the final W-P competitor to clinch a state berth on Thursday, as she sprinted to a third-place finish in the 3200. Adams finished in 13:10.12, which was more than a minute faster than the next closest finisher.

But Bartlow said Adams could have run it faster, had she not been focused on the triple jump.

“She was trying to save her legs a bit for the triple jump that would take place right after the run,” Bartlow said. “She got a PR (31-03.75), but it was not quite good enough as she placed fourth. She fought and got that on her last jump.”

Adams will look to qualify in both the 800 and 1600 today.

DeSales freshman Skylar Olson collected a second-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 28 feet, one inch.

Dayton’s Kaitlyn Andrews will head to state after first-place finishes in the triple jump and the javelin. She finished with a mark of 32-08.00 in the triple jump and a 111-foot, one-inch toss in the javelin.

Asotin’s boys and girls team both lead their respective fields heading into the final day of competition. The Panther boys scored 117 team points, which led the field by 75 points. Waitsburg-Prescott holds second on the boys side with 42 points.

The Asotin girls team racked up 62 points with Tekoa-Oakesdale/Garfield-Palouse in second with 36 points. The W-P girls team is in seventh with 15.

“They have some fine, fine athletic kids and it showed on day one,” Bartlow said of Asotin. “(They) lead the pack of Distirct 9 teams by a significant margin.”

The district meet finishes up today at 3 p.m.
