Letter - Care at local VA hospital very good

I would just like to say my husband got very good care at our Walla Walla VA Medical Center for many years.

His doctors and the nurses treated him with respect and when he needed care they could not provide, they sent him to the Seattle VA or the one in Portland, both equally as caring.

It is criminal what is happening to our veterans in this country they fought for and many died for.

The headline is pretty deceiving. There is no VA hospital in Walla Walla. There is a clinic and a Residential Treatment Unit, but not one medical bed. Sharon Helman got rid of all of the medical beds, inpatient psych, the nursing home, the ER and the ICU.

pdywgn - your exactly right. If a surgery is diagnosed your options are Spokane, Portland or Seattle. That depends what type surgery your in need of as to your destination. You also will not do it in one day - A friend was going in for knee replacement and would need to make three trips to Portland unless if you could afford to stay over.

I failed to mention that those three days were just for tests and clearance for future surgery. Then you are put on a waiting list for that surgery which at that time there were a couple on for 4 months already and still were waiting.

Not true! The closing of medical beds, inpatient psych, nursing home, ICU and ER was mandated by VA Central Office due to Utilization metrix not justifying their needs. Sharon Helman had nothing to do with it at all! The money saved was used to pay, in part, for the new clinic.

But now the question should be, since Sharon Helman was the Director at the time, did she or others manipulate the numbers to make it look like there was under utilization? Also, how can it be that the money saved went toward the new clinic? It is more likely that the money was then used to pay outside sources for services that the VA could no longer provide.

Roxanne Sisemore stood on the front steps of the main hospital and stated. "Maybe they should just shut the place". Pretty gutsy statement for someone that earned a career off the backs of veterans. It was Sharon Helman that used the excuse that the nurses weren't properly trained in IV therapy to shut down the Nursing Home.

The VA was slated for closure, so how can you even say that the money saved was used to build the new clinic when it took congressional intervention to save it and calls for the resignations of two Secretary of Veterans Affairs.
