Irish baseball moves on during state playoffs

SPOKANE — The DeSales High School baseball team continued its pursuit of a third consecutive state baseball championship with victories over Colfax and Northwest Christian in 2B regional action.

The Irish overcame offensive struggles to beat Colfax, 6-3, and Northwest Chrisian, 4-2, and move within two wins of another title.

The first game presented a rematch of the quarterfinals from last years tournament, yet yielded the same result. After escaping with a 1-0 victory over Colfax last season, the Irish once again prevailed in a game that proved to be both frustrating and fulfilling. DeSales jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, but pitching frustration caused both teams to adjust their strategy, DeSales coach Kim Cox said.

“I think both pitchers threw very well,” Cox said. “It was a very tight strike zone and that led to a lot of walks for both teams.”

In a game with only three hits between the two teams, it was important to capitalize on opportunities. DeSales outfielder Darryl Galloway led the way offensively with two hits, and the Irish never surrendered the lead the built with a very strong first inning. After both pitchers grew accustomed to the strike zone both pitchers did very well. Defense may have been the difference in the first round game, as the Irish played relatively mistake-free baseball with only one error to Colfax’s four.

The second game showed an improvement for Northwest Christian — who was knocked out in the first round of last year’s tournament — but the fundamentally sound Irish ended up advancing to next weeks semifinal. After pitching the first game, Cam Richman caught the second game and added two hits at the plate. Adam Eskil pitched four solid inning for the Irish before being relieved by Connor Richards. Cox was impressed by Richards ability to come in and secure the closely contested victory

“Connor came into a tight game,” Cox said. “(We were) ahead 4-2, he threw the last three and half innings and picked up the save.”

The Irish take on Adna in a rematch of last year’s championship next Friday at Centralia.
