According to information in some of the letters to the editors, Sheriff John Turner’s campaign materials and the Walla Walla County Sheriff’s Office website, crime was reduced in 2013 by 19.4 percent. This is false, a lie and misleading.
Turner states he got his data from the National Incident Based Reporting System. The key word here is “reporting.” There has been a 19.4 percent drop in the number of reported crimes, not actual crimes, not solved crimes, not investigated crimes — just reported crimes.
Why doesn’t the public feel like they trust Turner enough to report crimes?
This same report goes on to list the following crimes at zero. Incest, human trafficking, bribery, embezzlement extortion and stolen property were all reported to not have occurred in 2013. Really!
Does he think the citizens of Walla Walla are that naive to believe that no child was molested, no person sold for labor or organ harvesting and no property was stolen? I think Turner needs to go back to school to learn how to read a chart.
And as for Turner “giving back money to the taxpayers every year he’s been in office” — that is also misleading.
According to the Walla Walla County Auditor’s Office (the same website Turner has quoted), the sheriff’s budget expenditures increased nearly $500,000 since Turner was elected.
In fact, the budget had to be amended last year to reflect a $100,000 expense by the sheriff for professional services and a $120,000 increase for risk pool management (my guess because of all the attorney fees the county had to spend to deal with the unfair labor practices against the sheriff).
Maybe Turner needs to take an accounting class and learn the definition of “giving back.”
Oh, and let me also mention the statement that the K-9s are not costing the taxpayers any money. According to the same Auditor’s Office website, Turner has added a line item for canines the last two budget years at $4,000 and also money for his friends at Search & Rescue, a volunteer organization that claims to operate simply with donations and member dues.
I’m not buying what he’s selling and neither should the voters of Walla Walla.
