CORVALLIS — Wins were hard to come by for the McLoughlin High School tennis team at the second and third day at the state tournament.
The Pioneers went a combined 2-13 in their matches in day two and day three (Friday, Saturday). On day three, boys singles competitor Carlos Angel and girls singles player Kaylee Davis were still competing, but were knocked out in the double elimination format.
Mac-Hi’s Mauricio Gomez and Angel received first-round byes in the boys singles. However, both Gomez and Angel fell in the second round.
Angel dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision to Vineet Edupuganti in the second round and was victorious over Kai Arobogast, 8-3 in the consolation quarterfinals. He was then sent home with a loss to Ethan Berkey, 8-3. Gomez lost to Paul Fullhart, 6-1, 6-0 in the second round and fell to Jacob Mangan, 8-0, in the consolation bracket to be eliminated.
Both Pioneers Mackenzie Fite and Kaylee Davis Fite were granted first round byes in the girls singles brackets but lost in the second round.
Davis lost 6-0, 6-0 to Lara Rakocevic and Fite lost 6-1, 6-2 to Caitlin Carr in the second round.
Davis beat Meghan Belshe in the consolation quarters, 8-5, before being dropped out of the tournament, 8-3, by Rachel Hahn.
Fite was eliminated by Sarah Rempelos 9-8 (7-4) in the consolation quarterfinals.
The Mac-Hi doubles team of Rafael Villagomez and Leon Enskat lost 6-4, 4-6 and 6-3 in round two. Alex Alvarez and Ulises Zaragoza also teamed up to lose to a duo from Klamath Union, 6-1, 6-1.
