The Weston-McEwen baseball team beat Dufur, 9-7, in the District 6 Championship game at Bob White Field in Pendleton on Saturday.
PENDLETON — The Weston-McEwen High School baseball team rallied from a six-run deficit against Dufur to secure the District 6 Championship, 9-7, at Bob White Field on Saturday.
The TigerScots used a pair of pitchers to complete the game. Starter Justin Burke was dealing with the flu and gave up six runs, two earned, on five hits in 2 2/3 innings. Lance Thacker finished the game, going 4 1/3 innings and scattering six hits while giving up only one run.
“Justin Burke started and battled but just didn’t have it,” TigerScot coach TJ Haguewood said. “He has been rock solid all year and defensively we made a couple uncharacteristic mistakes. Lance Thacker came in and pitched terrific. Gave up one run in the fourth and then closed the door over the next three innings. Defensively we picked it up and battled.”
The TigerScot offense erupted for seven runs in third inning with the biggest hit coming off the bat of Jimmy Patrick. Patrick’s double scored two, and he also came around to score after a pair of errors on the same play, which made the score 7-6, W-M.
Dufur struck again in the top of the fourth with a run to tie it at 7-7.
In the bottom of the fifth, Dustin Dedios singled and stole second. He moved to third after a Dufur error and Thacker hit a sacrifice fly to score the would-be winning run. The TigerScots added an insurance run later in the inning to seal the two-run victory.
“Boys battled with their backs against the wall down 6-0,” Haguewood said. “This win is a program championship. Our young guys have worked hard to push our varsity. My assistants have worked so hard to improve all aspects of the game.”
The TigerScots (15-0 district 6) start the state playoffs at home Wednesday with the time and their opponent to be determined.
