1932 - 2012

Robert “Safety Bob” Johnson. Beloved husband, father, grandfather, teacher, Bob went to live with his Heavenly Father on Aug. 12, 2012. Born on Jan. 1, 1932, in Tacoma, Bob served six years in the Navy aboard the U.S.S. Point Cruz during the Korean War. He graduated with a master’s degree in teaching from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colo. Bob married the love of his life, Sue Sanborn Johnson, on Sept. 12, 1958.

Bob is well-known as the original “Safety-Bob” of the Walla Walla State Penitentiary. Throughout his years he taught industrial arts, industrial safety, and his CPR certification classes are responsible for several saved lives. Bob was a volunteer EMT and firefighter, and a member of the Eastgate Lion’s Club in Walla Walla. He took particular joy from singing in the choir at Emmanuel Lutheran Church.

Bob is survived by his wife, Sue Johnson; his son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Tracy Johnson; his daughter and son-in-law, SueLynn and Kevin Cole; his daughter, Irian Johnson; and his grandchildren: Kristin, Robert, Sarah, Jami, Vanessa, and Raymond.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 628 Lincoln Street, Walla Walla. In lieu of donations or flowers, Bob would ask that you vote Democrat in the next general election!
