Marie Usko

1923 - 2012

Marie Usko, a longtime resident of Walla Walla, passed away on Nov. 21, 2012, peacefully in her sleep, at Pioneer Memorial Hospital in Heppner, Ore.
Wilma Marie Alderson was born on Sept. 23, 1923, to Clarence and Madge Alderson in Thousand Springs Valley near Weiser, Idaho. Her fourth-great-grandfather, trapper John Hoback, guided Astor’s Overland Expedition, The Pacific Fur Company, through the Teton Mountains and discovered the route called the South Pass or as we know it, the Oregon Trail.

Stan and Marie married on Sept. 23, 1945. They had two daughters, Kari and Kathy. Stan was tragically taken from Marie in 1953 in an auto accident at the age of 30, after sharing eight years together. Nine years later Marie married Stan’s brother, Paul Usko, and they had one son Michael Usko. Paul and Marie were married for 31 years. In 1990 Paul lost a battle with cancer. Later in life while living at Camalu she married for a third time, to George Ray.

Marie will be deeply missed by her three children, Kari (Mike) Keown of Arlington, Ore., Kathy (Tom) Keown of Aurora, Colo., Michael Usko of Milton Freewater; and grandchildren, Keelie Keown, Kasye Sherva, Sasha Keown, Brooke Sandidge, Lance Brown, Tiffany Filan, Tyler Usko, Heather Usko, Rhiannan Danielle and Lori Gocus; and 10 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her dear brother, George Alderson; and sister, Laura Rouse.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, Dec. 28, at 11 a.m. at the Blue Mountain Community Church 928 Sturm Ave., Walla Walla.
