Lillian Louise McClure

1920 - 2012

Lillian Louise McClure, 92, passed away December 23, 2012, at
Washington Odd Fellows Home, Walla Walla, Washington.
Lillian was born September 7, 1920, in Shattuck, Oklahoma, to Alexander and Anna
Steinert, German immigrants from Russia. At an early age, her family moved from their homestead in Oklahoma to College Place, Washington. As a child and later as a young woman, she attended several
private Adventist schools in College Place, the Normal School,
Walla Walla College Academy and Walla Walla College.

On June 6, 1943, she and Jay P. McClure married in Union, Oregon.
Together they had five children: Peter McClure of Walla Walla, Jack McClure
of Saipan, M.P., Elizabeth “Betsy” Adkins, Sheri Ashmore and Kevin McClure
who also reside in Walla Walla.
Lillian was first and foremost a mother to her five children as well as an
efficient and accomplished homemaker. During the years her children were in
school, Lillian was active in the Berney PTA where she served as the president
for several years. She also served on the Walla Walla PTA County Council.
She organized and directed the Berney School majorettes and served on many
school district committees during the years her children were in school. She
received the PTA Golden Acorn Award in recognition of many contributions
to the educational system and the community.

Lillian was an accomplished seamstress and professionally made baton
and dance costumes, formals, draperies, as well as clothing for her family. She
loved to play bridge, golf, read and work crossword puzzles.
Lillian was a past member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and a
current member of the First Congregational Church and Plymouth Club
Women’s Fellowship. She was also a member of the Evergreen Garden Club,
various bridge clubs and the Milton-Freewater Golf Course.

After her children were in school, she worked as the secretary of Harper
Joy Theater at Whitman College until she decided to pursue her life-long
dream of becoming a registered nurse. At the age of 56, she returned to college
and graduated in 1978 with an Associate Degree in Nursing from Walla Walla
Community College. She was then employed as an R.N. at the Whitman
College Health Center and later at Providence St. Mary Medical Center
Home Health until her retirement.
Lillian dearly loved her five children and treated them all equally with her
tender, loving care. She was a woman who welcomed many friends and family
into her home with unconditional love.

In addition to her five children, she is also survived by her grandchildren:
Mark McClure, Jeff Ashmore, Tyler Adkins, Kally McClure, Caden McClure,
Rachel McClure, and Katie McClure as well as two great-grandchildren.
Lillian was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jay McClure, and
her only sibling, a brother, Alexander Benjamin Steinert.
