1947 - 2012
Barbara Jane Hanson, 64, passed away on Sept. 28, 2012, at her home in Walla Walla. Jane was born Nov. 13, 1947, in La Grande, to Harold and Ada True Spencer. Jane lived in the Walla Walla Valley for most of her life having moved from La Grande in her third-grade year. In high school, she was referred to as Janie, then later in life to her friends as Jane. If she was your friend, she was your friend for life.
Jane dedicated her time to Narcissa Rebekah Lodge and Enterprise Lodge of Odd Fellows. She was the voice of team penning events at the fairgrounds even though she did not ride horses. Jane was an avid member of Team Penners. She volunteered her vacation time to run the Apple Bin in the Kids Farm during the fair. In her spare time, Jane cared for her flowers and yard but kept Friday evenings saved for close friends, good food and good times.
However, in her most recent past, most of her attention and love was spent at her grandchildren’s sporting events. If it was soccer, basketball, baseball or football, you knew she was there by her cheering (and friendly advice). Her children and grandchildren recall they could always hear her.
Jane was preceded in death by her mother, Ada “Billie” Spencer Lane; her father, Harold Spencer; and a sister, Linda Issel. Jane is survived by her husband, Ted Hanson at the home; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and John Knowles of Walla Walla; son, Scott Hanson of Pullman, Wash.; brother and sister-in-law, John and Rita McNeil of Dixie; sister and brother-in-law, Kris and Jim Brown of Walla Walla; two grandchildren, Mason and Brady Knowles of Walla Walla; and several nieces and nephews.
There will be a celebration of Jane’s life on Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the College Place Presbyterian Church with Doug Hayes officiating. There will be a reception following the service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Walla Walla Community Hospice or Providence St. Mary Regional Cancer Center through the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder, Walla Walla, WA. Family and friends are invited to sign the online guestbook at www.herringgroseclose.com.
