Craig Allen Bruce

1953 - 2012

Craig Allen Bruce of Bend, Ore., passed away on Oct. 4, 2012, at his home in Bend. He was 59.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Oct. 21, 2012, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, located at 230 NE 9th St. in Bend. A reception will immediately follow. A concluding urn committal service with full military honors will take place on Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012, at 1 p.m. at Canyon City Cemetery in John Day, Ore.

Craig was born May 7, 1953, in John Day, to Ralph and Bradie (Laughlin) Bruce. He graduated from McLoughlin Union High School in Milton-Freewater in 1971 and enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in the Airborne Division and the “Old Guard” (the ceremonial unit for the Army). While serving in Washington DC, he met Joan Ulbricht of North Park, Ill., and in May of 1976 the couple was married.
After being honorably discharged, Craig attended Central Oregon Community College, graduating with a degree in Forestry. In 1981, Craig re-enlisted in the U.S. Army and flew helicopters and airplanes. He proudly served in Desert Storm as a reconnaissance pilot out of the 207th Military Intelligence Brigade. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1994, as a chief warrant officer. He then worked as a helicopter pilot with Air Logistics in Fairbanks, Alaska, retiring in 2007.
His passion for life was being an avid fisherman and hunter as he grew up in Eastern Oregon.

Craig is survived by his wife of 36 years, Joan Bruce of Bend; and his sons, William (Danielle) Bruce, Jamie Bruce, and Steven (Sumer) Bruce; and grandchildren, Nathan, James, Alaura, Colton, Makayla and Savannah, other survivors include his sisters, Sheila Bruce of John Day, and Sandra (Gene) Rysdam of Elgin; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents.
