Kay Giles

1936 - 2012

Kay Lonneker Giles, died after a long illness on Oct. 10, 2012, in Lynnwood, Wash. Kay was born Feb. 14, 1936, to Marguerite and Jay Lonneker in Ellensburg. She was raised among the wheat fields and animals of Southeastern Washington. She was chosen as a Fairest Farmerette at the Southeastern Washington Fair and reigned as queen of the Waitsburg Days of Real Sport Rodeo. Kay graduated from Prescott High School and attended Washington State University, she was an avid Cougar fan and inter-family wagers on the outcome of the Apple Cup each year were common.

While driving back from college she had a chance encounter with Don Giles when he installed some much needed tire chains for her. They were married in 1957 in Walla Walla, and lived in Moscow, Idaho, where they both attended the University of Idaho. After Don finished his studies, they moved to the coast where their daughters, Terri and Kristi, were born.
Kay was the involved mom, room mother, PTA representative, Girl Scout leader, the “cool” mom who made the most creative Halloween costumes! She was involved in many clubs including Garden Club, Gourmet Club and enjoyed going up skiing Thursdays during the winter on the “housewives” bus.
After Don’s retirement and being a homemaker for many years, Kay started her second act as president of Swift Petroleum, the business formed with two other partners and friends. After a decade of that and getting the girls through college, Kay was able to settle into a life that involved travel with Don including many summer stays in Leavenworth, Wash.
She also loved being a grandmother. Grandma Kay attended many band concerts, dance recitals, school events and volleyball games in the past several years.

Kay is survived by her husband of 55 years, Don Giles; her daughters, Terri Giles and Kristi Giles Gillihan; grandchildren, Austin and Kaylen Gillihan and their father, Scott Gillihan; as well as brother, Jim Lonneker, his wife, Linda; nephews, Jay (Anna) Lonneker, Jeff (Meghan) Lonneker and Joel ( Katie) Lonneker. She is also survived by brother-in-law, Paul Giles; nieces, Elizabeth Giles Ihling and Jan Giles Powell (David). Additionally, Kay has eight great-nieces and nephews, Emily Lonneker, Matthew and Maya Ihling, Paul, Amy, Heidi and Andrew Powell and the newest and Kay’s namesake, Lena Kay Lonneker born in July. Kay will also be missed by her many cousins, neighbors and friends.
