Leland E. Coe

1930 - 2012

Leland E. Coe of Gerber, Calif., and formerly of Milton-Freewater, passed away Sept. 15, 2012, at his home at the age of 82 years.

A celebration of his life will be Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012, at 2 p.m. at the Milton-Freewater Elks Lodge, 611 N. Main. Memorial contributions may be made to the McLoughlin High School FFA through Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main, Milton-Freewater, OR 97862.

Leland was born Feb. 23, 1930, in Milton-Freewater, the son of Harold B. and Ora Wilson Coe. He grew up in Milton-Freewater and lived up Walla Walla River on a ranch with his parents.
Leland was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Dorothy and Henrietta; and a brother, Donald.
He had participated in many cattle drives with family and friends through the years. During his high school years, he played basketball and was involved with the Future Farmers of America. He graduated from McLoughlin Union High School in 1948. He was instrumental in helping build the Pioneer Posse Grounds near Milton-Freewater. In his early 30s Leland moved to California, where he resided for 50 years. On Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012, Lee’s last day on Earth was also the last day of the 2012 Pendleton Roundup, which his daughter and many of his nieces and nephews attended in celebration of his life. He was a member of the Walla Walla Wagon Wheelers.

He is survived by his wife, Nora Coe; children, Gerry Salstrom (Steve), Mary Sasser (Pat), Kaye Malody (Mike), Steve Zimmerman, Randy Zimmerman and Mary, Donna Vaziri (Saeed), Karen Dixon, Linda Mellor (Dennis), Clark Brown, Susan Boyko (Richard); 16 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and lifetime friend, Al Herndon.
