1915 - 2012
Ellen Josephine Henderson passed away Aug. 27, 2012, at Park Manor Rehabilitation Center, at 97 years old. She was born July 17, 1915, in Payette, Ida., to Tillie Peterson Carlson and Adolph E. Carlson. Ellen was raised and graduated from high school in Halfway, Ore. In 1935 she married Ansel C. Henderson in Weiser, Ida., they moved to Walla Walla in 1936. Ansel passed away in 1966.
Ellen was employed by Walla Walla School District 140 as cook-manager of the cafeteria and worked at Sharpstein school for 21 years. School lunch was just starting at that time and everything was made from scratch in the school kitchen. She was a charter member and treasurer of Walla Walla Public School Employees for many years, an active member of the Central Christian Church and held many offices. Ellen enjoyed time with family and friends, an avid pinochle player, discussing world issues, and reading her Bible.
Surviving children are Kay (Leon) Hagen, Salem, Ore., Gary (Kathy) of Walla Walla, Gwen (Jesse) Burson of Arizona. A son, Dean, preceded her in death in 2002. She had seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandson.
There will be a celebration of life for Ellen at the Central Christian Church Fellowship Hall on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, at 1:30 p.m. Remembrances may be made to the Central Christian Church or charity of choice.
