Pauline was born June 17, 1918 in Steilacoom, Wash., to immigrant parents Alouis and Paulina Betschart from Switzerland and Austria. They came through Ellis Island in 1913. She was the seventh child out of 14 brother’s and sister’s. In 1936 Pauline married Walter Surface in Tacoma and they later moved to Weston Mountain to start a sawmill, where she helped her husband stack lumber and set chockers. She had numerous jobs since that time, at times working two jobs. The last job where she retired from was Lamb Weston at age 72. One of her favorite things to do was to load up her Dodge Caravan with friends and coworkers and head to Lehman Hot Springs on the weekends. She enjoyed planting flowers and fruit trees though most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

An elegant woman who will be remembered for helping many people with their financial aspects, Pauline was the kindest, gentlest, loving woman ever known. She was known as a woman of strong conviction and was the first to offer solace or support to others in need. Her unconditional love for all was inspiring and she gave such courage and hope to others, she will live on in all the hearts she touched forever. She was able to have wonderful care at home from her daughter, and caregivers Naomi and Donden. She will be truly missed by her family and friends who loved her very much.

Pauline is survived by her two children, son, Scott Surface; daughter, Susan May (Frank Morrison); two grandchildren, Megan and Jeanine Surface; great-grandson, Brenden Girma; and last living sibling, Louie Betschart; and many nieces and nephews.
