1948 - 2012
After a year long battle with cancer, Dennis Lee Townsend needed rest and Jesus took him home on Sept. 4, 2012. Dennis had fought a remarkable battle against cancer, becoming the victor by never allowing this horrible enemy to take charge of his life. Dennis would get dressed for work each day, no matter how weak he was, knowing that God would get him through the day. He set the bar high, very high; proving he was victorious at the end by the way he lived.
Dennis was born to Chet and Ilene Townsend of Dixie on Jan. 2, 1948, making him the NEW YEAR’S BABY for Walla Walla County that year. He lived most of his life in Dixie. Attended the Dixie School and graduated from Walla Walla High School in 1967.
At the age of 18 he became a volunteer firefighter for Walla Walla County Fire Department District 8. He fought fires alongside his father and brother, Ed. He was soon joined by all four of his boys and wife (Patti). Making fighting fires a “family” affair of which Dennis was extremely proud.
Dennis was a “family” man. He loved his wife and children, extended family and friends to extremes, not afraid to laugh out loud or greet someone with a heartfelt hug filled with love. He loved God with his whole being and it showed in the way he treated people. Dennis knew no strangers; everyone he met became family.
Dennis worked as a equipment operator for Walla Walla County Roads Department. In his spare time he loved to play “farmer” with the James brothers (Mark and Randy). As often as he could, he would be out plowing, seeding, driving trucks and getting his hands as dirty as he could deep in God’s soil.
Dennis loved to hunt. He looked forward to hunting season getting together with his boys, brothers, family and friends. One of the highlights of the whole hunting season was spent around the campfire hearing the day’s stories of “why that shot was missed” and how they would get it tomorrow.
Tomorrow…Only God knows what tomorrow will bring, but for today we give thanks to God for gracing us with a remarkable man, like Dennis.
Dennis’s living memorials are his wife, Patti; four sons, Khris Townsend, Kacey (Kailynn) Townsend, Chuck (Stacy) Berg, Nick (Koleson) Berg; two daughters, Kerri (Scott) Mathews, Karla (Troy) Armstrom; his mother, Ilene Townsend; sister, Glenda (Sam) Robertson; brothers, Ed (Judy) Townsend, Jim Townsend; and a number of nieces and nephews; and that one last whitetail buck his boys swear to tag this year.
A celebration of life will be held at the Walla Walla County Shop (990 Navion Lane) at noon, on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012. At the request of family and friends a donation account has been set up at GESA Credit Union for Patti Townsend, in memory of Dennis Townsend.
