Mona Rhae Maccarone

1936 - 2012

Mona Rhae Maccarone passed away on Sept. 7, 2012, at Park Manor Rehabilitation Center. Mona Rhae was born in Lincoln, Neb., on June 18, 1936, to Milo and Seville Ellison. They moved to Clyde, Wash., and then to Walla Walla, where Mona Rhae attended Walla Walla area schools. On Dec. 3, 1952, Mona Rhae married the love of her life, Anthony Jerry Maccarone. Together, they raised seven children on the family farm where they grew Walla Walla Sweet Onions and a variety of other crops. She enjoyed being a bus driver for the College Place School District for more than 25 years.

Mona Rhae had a passion for cooking; she even taught an Italian cooking class at Walla Walla Community College. She loved to entertain and you would often find her in her kitchen, cooking for her entire family. She embraced the Italian heritage and holidays were not complete without her famous baked goods. Mona Rhae also loved all animals. She raised goats and even made her own goat cheese. After retirement, Tony and Mona Rhae purchased a vacation home in Netarts Bay, Ore., where they spent their winters for 13 years until Tony passed away in 2001.
She is survived by her children, Milo Maccarone (Melody) of Lebanon, Ore., Leona Standage (Bill) of Walla Walla, Seville Tosto (Frank) of Kennewick, David Maccarone of Walla Walla, Monica McDaniel (Chris) of Kingston, Wash., Paul Maccarone (Cindy) of Walla Walla; her brother, Donny Ellison; sister, Joanne Schiermon; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 49 years; her son, Tony Rocco Maccarone; her grandson, Luke Kralman.

A celebration of life will be Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012, at 10 a.m. to noon at the Eagles, 350 S. 2nd Ave., in Walla Walla. Memorial contributions may be made in Mona Rhae’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association.
