1941 - 2013
Linda Lillis, former resident of Walla Walla, passed away at Mercy San Juan Hospital in Sacramento, Calif., on Jan. 26, 2013. Linda was born on June 5, 1941, in Waterloo, Iowa, to Lorenz “Joe” and Sarah Steege, the youngest of four children. She graduated from Waterloo West High School and won a full scholarship to attend Rockford College in Rockford, Ill. She went on to complete her training as a medical technologist at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. She later met and married Gerald Lillis in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Linda and Gerry had two daughters. Gerry’s job as an insurance agent had the family move many times throughout Wisconsin and Illinois. Linda continued to work as a medical technologist for over 20 years and raise her two girls.
Eventually, the family moved to Sacramento, Calif., where Linda went back to school to earn her master’s degree in hospital administration. She and Gerry divorced and she went on to work as an administrator for several skilled nursing facilities. After retiring, she moved to Walla Walla to be closer to her grandchildren. Linda loved to travel, and had many journeys throughout Europe and the United States. Her favorite adventure was a trip to South Africa and Botswana. She adored animals and had worked as a volunteer docent at the Sacramento Zoo. She also enjoyed reading, knitting and crocheting.
Linda is survived by her dearest friend and companion, Paul Pitfield; her daughters, Leslie Hamilton (Stephen) and Leigh Lillis (Mike Lee); her two grandchildren, Amanda and Sean Hamilton; her brother, Dwight Steege; her two sisters, Marilyn Rugg and Nancy Fontana; her beloved dogs, Annie, Mollie and Eddie.
A memorial service is yet to be announced.
