1922 - 2013
Carlotta was born May 23, 1922, in Milton, to Firman J. and Annabel Sheldon Nelson. She passed away on Feb. 4, 2013, at Park Manor.
After the death of her parents, she was raised by her aunt, Mrs. Angie Burroughs. Carlotta attended Walla Walla schools, graduating from Walla Walla High School in 1940 and completed nurse’s training at St. Mary’s School of Nursing in 1943 as a registered nurse. She practiced her profession for 30 years as an office nurse and as a surgery RN at St. Mary’s Hospital.
Carlotta married Michael H. Schafer in Tampa, Fla., on Jan. 14, 1944. She was a member of Assumption Catholic Church, St. Mary’s School of Nursing Alumni Association, Lady Elks, Senior Citizen’s Center, Assumption Church Ladies and Walla Walla Pioneer and Historical Society. Carlotta made and donated children’s clothing to several charity organizations.
Carlotta is survived by grandson, Michael M. Schafer; nephew, Richard Schafer; niece, Joan Beck; also several cousins including Howard P. Smith of Waitsburg, Jill Wood of Starbuck and Lassie Wittman of Rochester, Wash. She was preceded in death by her husband; son, Michael John Schafer; daughter, Patricia Ann Schafer; two brothers, Ben Nelson and Philip Nelson; and one sister, Anna Nelson Milleron.
Viewing and visitation will be held on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder, Walla Walla. The funeral Mass will be held on Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, at 1:30 p.m. at Assumption Catholic Church with Father Tyler Smedley, celebrant.
