Joseph Vincent Roff

1932 - 2013

Joseph Vincent “Joe” Roff of Milton-Freewater passed away Feb. 8, 2013, at his home. He was 80 years old. Funeral services will be Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home in Milton-Freewater with Pastor Steve Lyons officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the M-F Pioneer Posse Barrel Racing through the funeral home. Private interment will be in the Milton-Freewater Cemetery.

Joe was born Dec. 19, 1932, in Seattle, the son of Vincent C. and Anna M. Johnson Roff. When Joe was 2 years old, the family moved onto Government Mountain near Milton-Freewater. They later moved to Milton-Freewater, where Joe attended Grove School, Central School and graduated from McLoughlin Union High School in 1951. He then studied automotive repair at the Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls, Ore., and later at the J.M. Perry School, where he completed his studies. Joe took a job at Logan Chevrolet in 1953, then was employed at Teague Ford in Walla Walla until 1964. Soon after, he accepted a teaching position as an automotive repair instructor for Walla Walla High School. In addition to his teaching career, he purchased and operated the Chevron Service Station on Main Street in Milton-Freewater (where McDonald’s is now located), working there evenings and weekends. After selling the service station, he opened his own repair shop: Joe Roff’s Alley Shop in Freewater, which he operated after school. He retired from Wa-Hi in 1995.
Joe was married to Sharon Olinger from Sept. 24, 1953, until their divorce in 1980. On March 25, 1985, he married Judith L. McCallum in Lewiston, Idaho. Joe enjoyed hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. After retiring, he took up golf and enjoyed traveling with his wife in their motorhome. He was a member of the BPOE #2146 Elks, the National Education Association and Knights of Pythias.

He is survived by his wife, Judith Roff at their home; two daughters, Debbie Miller of Milton-Freewater, Dixie Aichele of Walla Walla; son, Don Roff of Walla Walla; step-son, Greg Partney of LaGrande; step-daughter, Pam Sibbett of Milton-Freewater; brother, Bill Roff of
Walla Walla; sister, Donna Furry, of Bend, Ore.; 10 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
