1925 - 2013
Eugene N. Soper, 87, passed away Jan. 2, 2013, at Providence St. Mary Medical Center from bronchial pneumonia.
He was born Oct. 7, 1925, in Pomeroy, to John and Ethel Benson Soper. He attended local area schools, Whitman College and University of Washington. Afterward, he took over his father’s business, Soper’s Leather Goods, and enlarged the store three times.
He married Betty Egg on Sept. 17, 1966, in Walla Walla, and together they did some world traveling. His favorite pastime was watching football. He was past president of the Walla Walla Symphony. He was especially proud of his 15 music scholarships at Walla Walla University.
Eugene is survived by his wife, Betty, at the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Richard Mello of Massachusetts; grandchildren, Jody and husband Tom Brooks of Rhode Island, and John Mello of Massachusetts; great-grandsons, Thomas and Cole Brooks of Rhode Island; two brothers, Ralph Soper of Bellevue, Wash., and Leroy Soper of Seattle; sisters-in-law, Mary Soper of Walla Walla, Jan and husband John Heathman of Hartline, Wash.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Keith Soper.
Viewing and visitation will be held Tuesday, Jan. 8, from 1 p.m. until 7 p.m. and Wednesday, Jan. 9, from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder St., Walla Walla, WA. The memorial funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 9, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Albert Gillin officiating.
