1916 - 2012
Betty B. Slaybaugh, 96, and longtime resident of Pomeroy, passed peacefully into the arms of our Lord on Dec. 26, 2012, at the Life Care Center in Kennewick near her daughter, Linda Tucker.
Betty was born Aug. 2, 1916, at the family home on the lower Tucannon to John and Lizzie Broyles. She was lovingly raised by William and Myrtle Bentley when Lizzie passed away following the birth.
Betty married Kenneth Allen Slaybaugh on March 22, 1935, and the couple farmed throughout Garfield and Whitman counties. The couple raised four children, Kenneth “Wayne,” Larry “Bud,” Monte and Linda.
Husband Kenneth and sons Bud and Monte preceded her in death as well as two brothers, John and Frank Broyles; a grandson, Davey Slaybaugh; son-in-law, Gene Tucker; and step-granddaughter, Sheila Land.
Besides being a devoted farmer’s wife, mother and homemaker Betty later worked at the Green Giant Cannery in Pomeroy and Dayton, the Pataha Café, and retired as a retail clerk at Cardwell’s Department Store. Betty loved to cook and developed her talent at an early age helping feed harvest crews. Baking was her favorite and she was always sharing tasty treats with friends and neighbors. Other hobbies included crocheting, knitting and gardening. She also had a love for the outdoors. Family and friends share many happy memories of fishing and camping adventures, trips to the Blue Mountains to cut wood, fresh churned ice cream packed in snow banks, listening to stories around the campfire, picking huckleberries and searching for mushrooms.
Betty was a member of the Pleasant Grove Grange and a volunteer processing Garfield County Ambulance Fund donations.
She is survived by son, Wayne Slaybaugh and his wife Reta of Walla Walla; daughter, Linda Tucker of Kennewick; two daughters-in-law, Claudia Slaybaugh and Karen Slaybaugh of Pomeroy; many nieces and nephews; 10 grandchildren; one step-grandson; 16 great-grandchildren; one step-great-granddaughter; and two great-great-granddaughters.
Services will be held at Richardson Brown Funeral Home, 750 Columbia St., in Pomeroy on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, at 11 a.m. A brief graveside service will follow at the Pomeroy Cemetery. Memorials can be made in her honor to the Garfield County Ambulance Fund, 66 N. 6th St., Pomeroy, WA 99347. Please sign the online guestbook at www.merchantfuneralhome.com.
