1931 - 2013
Longtime resident Julia A. Borgers passed away January 22,
2013, at her home in Walla Walla, Washington.
She was born February 25, 1931, in Rugby, North Dakota, to Elmer
and Katherine Sheet Mergenthal.
The family moved to Kent, Washington in 1942. She graduated in
1949 from Kent High School and entered the nursing program at
Providence School of Nursing, graduating in 1952.
In 1954, she and Harold Borgers married and moved to Walla
Walla in 1958, following his tour of duty in Germany.
She worked at St. Mary’s Hospital for ten years, for Dr. John
B. Adams for twelve years and at the Odd Fellows Home for
five years. She retired to care for her husband until he passed
away in 1987 of cancer.
She was a life member and current secretary of the V.F.W.
Ladies Auxiliary, member of Narcissa Rebekah Lodge; volunteered
at the VA Hospital, RSVP, the Senior Center and was on
the Board of Directors at the time of her death. She also volunteered
at Assumption Church. She loved to travel within
the United States also seeing many foreign countries. Best of
all, she enjoyed taking in all the leading casinos in Washington,
Oregon, and Nevada, especially Reno.
Julia is survived by two daughters: Barbara Ellwein of Walla
Walla and Carol (Tim) Carlin of Salem, Oregon; a son, James
(Nancy) Borgers also of Walla Walla; six grandchildren: Heidi,
Alex, Amy, Christa, Katie and Craig; nine great-grandchildren:
Jason, Danny, Andrea, Lindsey, Christopher, Matthew, Andrew,
Matthew James and Ayden; two sisters: Mary DeVany
and Dorothy Ring; sister-in-law, Donna Mergenthal; and numerous
nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by
her husband; her parents and a brother, Ken Mergenthal.
Family and friends may pay their respects from 1:00 p.m. to
6:00 p.m. on Monday, January 28, 2013, at Mountain View-
Colonial DeWitt, 1551 Dalles Military Road, Walla Walla,
Washington, followed by the Recitation of the Rosary by Sr.
Helen Mason at 6:00 p.m., Monday at the funeral home. The
funeral service will be 1:00 p.m.., Tuesday, January 29, 2013,
at Mountain View-Colonial DeWitt. The graveside service and
burial will follow on Tuesday at Blue Mountain Memorial Gardens,
300 SE Myra Road, College Place, Washington. The Rev.
Jeff Core will officiate.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Senior Center,
V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, or Assumption Catholic Church
through the funeral home.
