Marcia Kyle Helfer

1924 - 2013

Marcia Kyle Helfer, 88, of Fort Smith, Ark., died Jan. 27, 2013, in Fort Smith. At the request of the deceased, there will be no services. Private inurnment will take place in the Memory Garden at Mountain View Cemetery in Walla Walla.

Mrs. Helfer was born on Dec. 21, 1924, to Ralph and Audrey Hodgen Kyle in Milton. She received her education in Milton (now Milton-Freewater) and graduated from McLoughlin Union High School in 1943. She was a bookkeeper for several years and held several positions with the Seattle First National Bank in Walla Walla before transferring to the Spokane & Eastern Branch, Spokane, in 1956.
On July 1, 1956, she married Lyle Helfer. Due to Mr. Helfer’s position with the Interstate Commerce Commission, they were domiciled in several locations. These included Spokane, Seattle, Portland, Milwaukee, Wis., and Salt Lake City, Utah. During these years they enjoyed traveling for both business and pleasure. They returned to Walla Walla upon retirement in 1981 then moved to Fort Smith in 2005 to be near family.
Over the years, Mrs. Helfer enjoyed volunteer work with Stevens Memorial Hospital in Edmonds, Wash., and the Senior Citizens Center, and Girl Scouts of American in Bountiful, Utah. After returning to Walla Walla she volunteered for Helpline, the Walla Walla Museum, The Walla Walla Senior Center and R.S.V.P. She served on the Boards of both R.S.V.P. and Friends of R.S.V.P. for several years. She was an avid reader and crossword puzzle fan. For many years she enjoyed growing flowers and herbs.
Mrs. Helfer was a member of the Girl Scouts of America, Walla Walla Senior Center, A.A.R.P., the the Lady Elks, Walla Walla Pioneer and Historical Society, R.S.V.P. and Friends of R.S.V.P.

Survivors include a sister, Patricia Dotson of Fort Smith; a special niece and nephew, Lisa R. Smith of Hackett, Ark., and Carl Robertson of Rudy, Ari., who assisted her in her latter years; niece, Dayne Cameron of Fort Smith; and nephew, Mark Robertson of Little Rock, Ark.; a surrogate daughter, Francine Locati, of Walla Walla; and niece and nephew-in-law, Jackie and Gary Matlock of Spokane; also numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death her husband, Lyle David Helfer; and three step-children, Danna Lylene Helfer, Gary Lyle Helfer, and Larry Lynn Helfer; and a sister, Janet Good.

Cremation will be under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home in Fort Smith, Ark.
