Maggi Banderas, left, of Whitman College's Residence Life and Housing Department shuts the rear hatch of her balloon-filled Mini Copper while Alex Bruner, 11, waits to load his mom's small Mazda 3 with a big bundle of brightly-hued helium balloons in the parking lot of Plaza Safeway Thursday morning. The six dozen balloons---plus 5 "Welcome" balloons---were for opening day of Whitman Residence Halls for incoming freshman. Although classes don't start until next Tuesday, all freshman were required to show up on Thursday, August 25 for freshman orientation. The balloons were delivered back to the campus in the two small cars in one trip and placed at the Residence Halls. The balloons are part of the annual welcome process to the newest class at Whitman College. August 25, 2011
