A group of Marines each wears a beanie made by Vera Robbins. The Milton-Freewater woman recently crocheted her 1,000th beanie. Robbins started making and shipping beanies to troops in Afghanistan and Iraq in 2004.

Since 2004, Vera Robbins has crocheted more than 1,000 beanies, which have been sent off in batches of 40 to Iraq and Afghanistan.
MILTON-FREEWATER - It takes Vera Robbins about two hours to crochet a beanie, something a machine could do in a matter of minutes.But those machine-made beanies would lack a key element to the beanies Robbins gives to U.S. troops to keep their heads warm
