StrongI am curious how Mr Cooper can run for Sheriff when his recurring knee injury keeps him from being physically able to perform his job duties at the present time. The physical demands of the Sheriff's Job will be much the same as the job he says he is not capable of doing now, therefore collecting L&I for the past year or so. I respectfully ask Mr Cooper to explain his rationale for asking for our vote?????

I agree Coach I want to know why he thinks he can do the Sheriff's job but not the one he has now. Or does he just not plan on doing any work as Sheriff and collect the paycheck????

Interesting how opinionated people are without knowing both sides of an issue. I am tired of an elected official who constantly feels like he must 'justify' his actions/position by writing special editorials in the paper.

3

downhillracer 2 months, 3 weeks ago

What makes you think folks aren't informed to your level of 'knowing'? I'd much rather have a Sheriff that interacts and engages conversation with the community, versus, well, someone who doesn't. Driving around in a giant SUV with a badge decal in the back doesn't really cut it.

CoachG 2 months, 3 weeks ago

@aurora----what would you do if your good name was being slandered? The "sour grapes" campaign that Mr Cooper is running is turning voters off. I wish Cooper would address the issues and stop the negative campaigning. Can you tell me what Cooper's Platform is? I don't see it on his website.

3

aurora 2 months, 2 weeks ago

@ CoachG First, I haven't seen any negative campaigning by Mr. Cooper. Secondly, it appears to me that Mr. Turner is in violation of the law by even speaking of Mr. Cooper's injury. I reiterate my statement in my previous post, no one writing on this thread has knowledge of the full story. As far as Mr. Turner having to defend his position . . . many elected officials in our county have managed their offices over the years without EVER writing one special editorial in the UB! Just sayin . . .

CoachG 2 months, 3 weeks ago

@Bailey---where exactly is Cooper's Platform? URL?

You pathetic little hatters. Collecting a paycheck for nothing is Turner's act. He rarely visits the office since the election kicked off. He spends county resources campaigning and burning county gas in his county car which clearly violates campaign law.

Firstly the demands of sheriff are not physical. Anyone seeing Turner running like a girl in the annual firefighter verses police baseball match last Saturday realizes he completely lacks physical ability. This isn't surprising for a Nancy boy who gets regular pedicures at the East-gate nail salon.

"my thoughts" is the pen name of John Fancy Nails Turner who is throwing a blog tantrum because he sees it all slipping away. Yes the poll results correctly reflect the relentless political and administrative bumbling of Fancy Nails since he took office. His supporters, although viciously rabid, are an endangered breed. Those who know Turner best like him least. Even Turner's past supporter Barry Blackman is running against him. Being challenged by two middle managers should render a clue to the electorate there is a complete lack of confidence in Turner's ability to lead. Watch your speed come next January 1st Johnny boy. There are a lot of deputies looking for pay back.

@Tenring---first I have to disagree with you about the physical demands that the Sheriff faces in the execution of his duties. I for one do not want to call on a sheriff who can't chase down an assailant, navigate stairs, climb over obstacles and such due to his recurring knee injury. The very fact that Tom Cooper won't address his physical limitations in an open and honesty manner speaks volumes.

You hit the nail on the head when you said that Sheriff Turner is "being challenged by two middle managers" --- YOU are correct! Both Barry Blackman and Tom Cooper are exactly that MIDDLE MANGERS not qualified to be the Walla Walla County Sheriff.

And lastly, Barry Blackman said it best in his letter to the editor during the last election. Referring to John Turner he said, and I quote: "His ideas are fresh, realistic and reasonable and are more than rhetoric" and "Turner's experience and background give him the superior qualifications to be sheriff"

I couldn't agree more with Blackman's opinion as the same is true this time around.

campbell_rd 2 months, 2 weeks ago

Tenring, You obviously don't know John Turner. He is a gentleman, a lawyer, a former police officer and an awesome sheriff. I know this to be true it isn't a rumor. I find it extremely offensive that you slander a great man, and insult me just for supporting him. Stop believing everything you hear and stick to facts you can prove. I have watched Sheriff Turner at work and on his own time serve this great community.

2

CoachG 2 months, 2 weeks ago

Well said campbell_rd --- I second your statements. I have asked Tom and his supporters to provide their platform with no result. On Tom's website there is no mention of his plan for 2015 and beyond. Then take a look at Sheriff Turner's ---- what a difference.

Wish Cooper would come out of hiding and debate Sheriff Turner on the merits of their ideas for a better Walla Walla. Thanks to Sheriff Turner we are making headway against crime as it is down almost 20%

SRUDE 2 months, 2 weeks ago

@Tenring - Your comments are wholly inappropriate and offensive. Dirty campaigning is not appreciated in Walla Walla and does not do your candidate any good, regardless of who he may be. If you are bold enough to say the offensive things you've said, the readers here deserve to know your identity. My name is Skyler Rude - I live in College Place and I am NOT afraid to put my name behind my stand for clean campaigning in our community. Mudslinging behind anonymity is cowardly and not appreciated. For the record and the readers here, would you please state your name?

This poll is so funny. Everyone know the US IS against Turner. His supporters usually don't get the paper. You can also cast your vote even if your not a Walla Walla County resident. LAME.

2

bgaines 2 months, 3 weeks ago

I find it interesting that many people seem to have knowledge of what is a private issue that would only be known by internal people. Just saying.unless people from L & I shares there clients records. I'm assuming they don't so any of you that seem to have so much knowledge I have to ask where did you get your information.

2

CoachG 2 months, 2 weeks ago

CHECK THE PUBLIC RECORD: Cooper first claimed that he was too injured to work as a peace officer in early September 2012. He has not worked as a full-duty peace officer since that time.

How can we trust that, if elected, Tom would be able to perform the physical elements of the Sheriffs job? If he would come clean and be transparent about his limitations, there might be an outcry for him withdraw from the race.

4

Tenring 2 months, 3 weeks ago

It is no surprise "my thoughts" or Fancy Nails Turner was the first to figure out a way to cheat by having out of count residents voting in the poll. Turner is famous for using deceit and his position to deal off the bottom of the deck to gain unfair advantage. Getting his California buddies to vote is likely how he managed to get any votes at all.

2

downhillracer 2 months, 3 weeks ago

You loose all validity and respect when you stoop to name calling and school-yard bully rants. You clearly have a very personal bias and aren't able to present any factual evidence for your bizarre hysterics, nor are you taken seriously by anyone. Anyone.

5

Tenring 2 months, 3 weeks ago

Fancy Nails supporters don't get the UB because they only consume information provided by John.

1

CoachG 2 months, 2 weeks ago

@Tenring----actually I do get the UB and have known Rob Blethen for many years. He will be sorely missed by this community.

In reading the praise for Blackman in tonights paper I had to laugh. Barry is a nice guy and I actually had some interaction in working with him two years ago during a Gang Study I was involved in.

Here is a question for you. Did you know that Barry Blackman had names, and still has names on his website that were posted as Blackman "SUPPORTERS" , but that these people DID NOT give permission to him or his campaign to use their name? Names that were posted on Blackman's Website without their knowledge included: Rob Blethen, several Lawyers, Real Agents and someone from the prosecutors office. I personally spoke with several people that have since had their names removed. Simply put -- they were shocked.

If you don't believe me -- check the list of "SUPPORTERS" on his website. See if you or someone you know is listed there. So much for Barry Blackman's integrity and his calling others "liars" After all, isn't using peoples names with out their knowledge a lie of the highest order?

3

mythoughts 2 months, 3 weeks ago

I am not Sheriff Turner and I don't know who Fancy Nails is. I found out about the inconsistencies from a Blackman supporter. How about sticking to the truth not lies and PERSONAL attacks. I doubt that will happen with cooper supporters from reading these posts. You are the company you keep.

2

CoachG 2 months, 3 weeks ago

Come meet Sheriff Turner tomorrow, Sunday, June 8th at the Hampton Inn. 1:30pm --- no question is off limits. Hope to see you there! Let's sort out the "inconsistencies" together.

It's interesting to note that those who support Turner are called "haters" by those who oppose him. Reviewing this blog, it seems that just the opposite holds true.

I respect Sheriff Turner and the good work he's done for the communities he serves. His accomplishments have been many, but like any politically held official, he'll always have his detractors. I respect that he's taken the "high-road" choosing not to lash back at (or even answer) every innuendo and untruth thrown at him. It would be very easy to fall into that trap, but he's chosen not to. It must be difficult to stand by and let the rumors fly.

I believe he's been extremely transparent (holding regular town meetings, discussing the positions he holds through U-B editorials, etc.). And, he's holding an open house today in which he's invited his supports and critics, alike, to meet with him . . . . with no question being "off limits." I'd encourage anyone who is leveling criticism toward him (or who might be believing everything they read by his detractors) to go and meet with him personally to discuss those concerns. He's open and willing to discuss any and all issues.

It seems that, so often, that Chronyism rules . . . . individuals reluctant to accept change (even positive change) that could potentially disrupt the status quo. I hope that Sheriff Turner can continue to disrupt that status quo for the purpose of making our communities safer and more secure. How can anyone argue against that goal?

speters89 2 months, 2 weeks ago

Hey tenring how about issues versus name calling? John is the best qualified person to be Sheriff and his record proves that. If you can provide real reasons to support Cooper let's hear them.

CoachG 2 months, 2 weeks ago

Sheriff John Turner is endorsed by all 39 Sheriffs in Washington State.

Sheriff Turner was nominated by peer Sheriffs from across Washington State for the National Sheriff's Association Ferris E. Lucas Award for National Sheriff of the Year and is the February 2014 recipient of the National Sheriffs Association Medal of Merit for commendable contributions to our Walla Walla County Community.

Sheriff John Turner has a School Safety Plan for Walla Walla County Schools in his PLATFORM for 2015 and beyond. Do any of the other candidates for Sheriff? I don't see either Cooper or Blackman's PLATFORM on their websites?????

@srude---Please go to Re-elect Sheriff John Turner and consider attending one of Turner's Meet & Greet meetings, that he holds regularly. Your comments are a breathe of fresh air. I believe the "silent majority" will mail in their ballots on August 5th and then we can have a real debate between Cooper and Sheriff Turner. Maybe then we can examine Cooper's platform which, at this time, is lacking.

Sheriff Turner has posted his platform for all to see on his website. Please take a closer look, come to a meet & greet and ask the tuff questions---Sheriff Turner will answer honestly and you will see a caring, honest and dedicated public servant that deserves your vote to be re-elected as Walla Walla County Sheriff..

SRUDE 2 months, 2 weeks ago

CoachG - I supported Turner for Sheriff in the previous election and volunteered on his campaign committee because I felt he was the most qualified for the position. I am just tired of the attacked that go on here when people don't have to disclose their identity and can do it anonymously. It's cowardly. There is nothing wrong with supporting one's candidate regardless of who that may be, but when there is an accusation involved, these authors need to take responsibility by signing their posts. -Skyler Rude

I find the hypocrisy of the few Turner supporters who post most of these comments rediculous. They post every manner of lie and slander about the other candidates then whine about any comment defending their slanderous attacks. The real mud slinging comes from Fancy Nails himself by alleging Sgt. Cooper doesn't want to work due to an exaggerated knee injury. Sgt. Cooper was assisting in the detectives office until he announced his intention to run for Sheriff. Days later Turner had Cheif Deputy King and Ed Fryer (Hong Kong Eddie) send Cooper home with the lie there was no light duty available. Turner hid in his office while he had King and Fryer do his dirty work.

Matt Stroe recently resigned from the Sheriff's Office in pursuit of security director position at Whitman College. The WWSO position held by Stroe was a light duty position created by Turner to accommodate his knee injury. The position held by Stroe is still open yet Turner refuses to offer it to Cooper and is actively seeking anyone else to fill the position. This is the typical treachery of John Turner inflicting harm to someone else then demonizing them for the resulting tragedy. This is why there are two middle managers running against Turner.

The few vocal Turner supporters claim it inevitable some would oppose a good Sheriff. How then do they mitigate the fact that previous well respected sheriffs Humphreys and Jackson ran un opposed by their employes as encumbents? Why was there an absence of bad press and controversy during the Jackson and Humphreys administrations? The truth is there are a few people that will defend any evil act of tyranny if they believe they can profit from it. Even Hitler had ardent supporters.

There is more to being a good Sheriff than just wearing a badge. Sheriff John Turner is smart, caring and active within the Walla Walla County Sheriff' s department. The men and women under his command respect him as their leader. Of course there are some detractors, which represent a very small percentage of the department, that continue to shoot holes in the boat. What business do you know that 100% of the employers are happy? In my experience the squeaky wheel gets the grease or in this case coverage in the UB.

Unfortunately, negative campaigning makes headlines and sells newspapers. Hopefully, the UB will begin to print the boring stuff. Like each candidates platform for 2015 and beyond. We will be able to read what each candidtae has in store for our future. How their PLATFORM will take shape and what direction their leadership will guide the Sheriff's department into the futureā€¦..

@SRUDE---I would state my name, however I don't feel this is as important as you do. You can come meet and talk to me face to face at the Sheriff Turner Meet & Greets, the Diversity Day Event and July 4th in Pioneer Park. I will be actively educating voters as to what Sheriff Turner's goals are for 2015 and beyond.
