City honored for U.S. 12 work

COLLEGE PLACE -- _ The City Council's work in helping make a dream of a four-lane freeway from Burbank to Walla Walla a reality was recognized at a Monday Council meeting.
``This entire project is coming together beyond anybody's dream,'' Port of Walla Walla Executive Director Jim Kuntz told the Council.
He praised the city for its ``leadership'' and ``following the legislative process'' that's helped the U.S. Highway 12 Coalition, to which the city belongs, secure a total of about $116.5 million for the project so far.
Kuntz also recognized Mayor Ed Ammon for taking part in a recent lobbying effort in Washington, D.C.
Ammon, along with other coalition members, spoke to lawmakers about securing an additional $5 million in federal money to build an interchange at the intersection of Pine Street and Highway 12 and to help with the design of Phase 7 of the project. Phase 7 would four-lane the highway between McDonald Road and Nine Mile Hill.
The coalition expects to hear whether they receive the federal allocation in the late summer or early fall, Kuntz said this morning.
In appreciation of the efforts, Kuntz gave Ammon a framed artist's rendition of Phase 1. The phase, completed last fall, four-laned the highway between McNary Pool and the Attalia vicinity.
Kuntz presented the other Council members with copies of the artist's rendition.
