Travis had his head down, making engine noises as he moved his earth mover across the porch. Erin sashayed up to him in her dress-up gown, accessorized with one of mom’s old hats, and high-heeled shoes. She swished her dress as she turned her back to Travis saying, “Travis, would you button me up?” Travis looked up from his trucks and replied regretfully, “I’m sorry Erin, but I only know zippers and snaps.” Erin walked off in a feigned snit as we tried our best to stifle our laughter as we watched them pretend to be grownup. The day for lovers is named after Saint Valentine, but there are varying opinions as to the origin of Valentine’s Day. One is that St. Valentine was a Roman martyred for refusing to give up his Christian faith. Another is that he was a priest jailed for defiance during the reign of Emperor Claudius II. The emperor had cancelled marriages and engagements in Rome in order to keep his army focused upon battle campaigns. Saint Valentine aided Christian martyrs and secretly married couples, and for this kindness he was jailed, beaten and beheaded. He suffered this martyrdom on Feb. 14, about the year 269. He became known as the patron saint of engaged couples, happy marriages, love and lovers.
