If "the reason for attacking the U.S. is to ensure we will not defend Israel," wouldn't an easier deterrent be to simply change our policy on Israel and let them fight their own battles? That seems far more reasonable than attacking Iran to stop them from attacking us so that we won't attack them when they attack Israel...
