Yes, the word "marriage" has historically been defined as a union between a man and a woman, but "medical care" has historically been defined as leeches and snake oil and transportation has been historically defined as a horse and buggy. Society is constantly changing and our language has adjusted to accomodate that change. If something works, I'm all for leaving it the same, but to leave something the same simply "because it has always been that way" is not a good enough reason. You may as well be honest and admit that you want a sperate term for same-sex unions because you feel supperior to them in your more traditional life style. It's insulting to think that same-sex couples should be able to have all the same things that traditional couples have as long as we call them by different names. What's next, they can adopt children but they have to call them non-biological offspring? Give me a break! All people should have the same rights and I'm embarrassed for you that you took the time to write that down and have it published in the paper.

commonsense...I think I love you roflmao!!!! Thank you very much for your candid and wonderfully truthful response!! I am
one of "those people"(gasp) who is in a same sex committed relationship, we are domestic partners recognized by the state of Washington. So I suppose that means I am a card carrying lesbian. But in all seriousness,We have been together for 10 years.(I was married and procreated 3 fabulous sons..so I am off the hook there,)We work, we have friends we have grandchildren, and there is nothing "abnormal" in our lives.. that is to say,We have a family and a life like any other citizen. To downgrade us to second class citizens because of who we love is insulting, hurtful, and damaging.,If JL Davis saw me on the street, he would have no clue, I dont wear it tattooed on my forehead. So how we live out lives is really none of his business, and if he wants to look at beautiful brides in gorgeous dresses, then he can go buy a bridal magazine!

I shudder to think how your little "historical definition" theory applies to formerly contentious issues such as interracial marriage, voting rights for women, segregation and even slavery. "Let's keep things as they are," you say.

Culture changes. Societies evolve. And in a few short decades kids will be reading about people like you in textbooks, shaking their heads with confusion and disgust.

Please, keep smiling at "Just Married" signs. There will soon be a lot more where those came from.

Thank you mytwocents! My views are usually neither popular nor understood. It's nice to have someone agree with me once in a while. :)
