MLesko: Yes, I agree ..... as are most letters by Mr. Schmaltz over the years whether from here, Maryland or (now) Colorado. The monster (I would refer to as a rabid insect) who shot the students and others in Roseburg had no previous record that would prevent his purchase of a firearm. This happens often -- no previous conviction nor official psychiatric issue that would appear on a NICS check to stop these despicable perpetrators. It's very interesting to compare the history of these shooters to prescribed psychiatric behavior-controlling drugs, however. This is a major issue related to these shootings that must be addressed. Read this link as an example (there are many to be found online):
Should I really take the advice from an obvious idiot? I don't think so.
I agree with Mr. Peacock in that the extremes on each side of the political spectrum are equally as wrong. And also the sad situation when we must vote for the lesser of two evils. However, I do agree with Mr. Lesko's opinion that much more damage is being caused by the left of center Democrats and "Liberalists". (I tend to prefer calling them "Leftist Progressives.") In recent years, the Democrat candidate isn't really the "greater of two evils" but FAR greater .... and this will be the same in 2016. I'm not sure our country can survive a far left "Progressive" like Hillary Clinton or an out-and-out Socialist like Bernie Sanders ... or a far left clown like Biden for that matter. Gone are the days of CLASSIC liberals as were many of our founders like Thomas Jefferson and Paine. Or even JFK.
MLesko: Your point is spot on and in the x-ring (bull's eye). Mr. McCaw obviously got his facts wrong once again. The whole episode was not just a publicity stunt but an apparent provocation in my view, engineered for whatever reason by the kid's parent. BTW, keep your excellent letters coming. Always well done.
I have no expertise on this issue other than I do love trees (once memorizing a poem by that name in Miss Little's English class at Wa-Hi a few decades ago.... "I think that I shall never see.....a poem lovely as a tree......etc.) Also, I've always been supportive of carbon dioxide emissions, which I know tree's love to consume. All that said, I'll just say this -- I don't ever want to see another Walla Walla flood, so I'll trust the Corps of Engineers to help keep that from happening. Let me just add that I love Rook's Park -- and appreciate their efforts to keep it as beautiful as it is.
I have a suggestion. Before blaming the fires on "human-caused climate change", why not present some actual evidence of that? Never mind -- the answer is simply that there is none. However, I agree with you that funding should be available to do everything possible to prevent and fight fires. I believe the solution is not more taxes but a better allocation of funds, both state and federal. Cut unnecessary programs and waste. We all know there is far too much of that.
I agree, Mr. Jacobson. I believe we are on very dangerous ground until the current spineless administration is replaced. And after that, if the new one has the same incompetent lack of courage and resolve regarding Iran and militant Islamism.
I'm watching the CNN debate right now, and wondering just how well mtnthc would do at one of those eleven podiums. Laughed off the stage would be my guess. So just who is the clown?
Outstanding letter, Dixie, and spot on.
Agree, thrifty. Great democrats ended with JFK's Camelot. Since 1963, they started veering so far leftward they are mostly social democrats and "progressives" or worse.
