1) The Walla Walla Chamber of Commerce ended their role as the organizer and producer of the Walla Walla Balloon Stampede as released on 2/20/14 (about 80 days before the event date) See link to release here: http://union-bulletin.com/news/2014/f...
The Fairgrounds charges $11,000 to rent the facilities for the weekend. So 80 days before the event, we have no organizer or producer for the Balloon Stampede. In step in a couple from Boise Idaho (Scott Spencer) to come in and organize and produce this, if they wouldn't have done that, who knows if there even would have been a Balloon Stampede this year!
2) Here is the schedule that was posted right on the balloon stampede website for all to see on what the festivities were scheduled to be: http://www.wallawallaballoonstampede.com/schedule.html . It included balloon demonstrations as well as the worlds tallest balloon the coke bottle, and the liberty bell, and they did a performance that allowed kids to dance around the balloon. By the time Nite Glow ended, it was about 4.5 hours of FREE entertainment thanks to the great sponsors that allowed it to happen!
3) Anytime you have large events, with a lot of people, traffic is going to be an issue. (Have you ever been to a Pro sporting event or a concert?) I was one of the last to leave the nite glow site and was home by 10pm, so traffic wasn't THAT bad. (Try leaving the WWCC parking lot after 12:20 classes get out!)
So a major event that was put together in less than 80 days in locations that hasn't hosted them before (Walla Walla CC) I'm sure there will be some things that will be addressed in the committee meetings in ways to make things better in future meetings.
All that said,,Yes I would say it was a major success.
How about next time you write a letter bashing one of our great citys annual events, you give some examples of things you didn't like and suggestions to make it better. This was the 40th Balloon Stampede and it was forced to go through some changes this year, and last time I checked, we don't have a say in the weather! As one who donated my weekend to be on a balloon crew, I had more fun then I ever have had at a Balloon Stampede. I have complete faith in Scott Spencer and all those who sponsor and volunteer in making this an even better event in the years to come!!
Oregon and Hawaii are part of Alaska's application.
